Whether you are a “weekend warrior” or a full-time athlete who needs to be in top physical condition, your active lifestyle does not need to be limited by a sports injury.

Dr. Vitolo specializes in treating injuries of the shoulder and knee, which are the two most common sports injuries. Countless patients from near and far have benefitted from his excellent surgical skills by returning to the sport they love. In fact, his past and current sports injury expertise includes serving as the team physician with the Boston Red Sox, New Jersey Cardinals, and currently with the Sussex Skyhawks.

Dr. Vitolo’s support doesn’t end with surgery. By helping you understand how you got injured, Dr. Vitolo may help you prevent future injuries. Plus, you can rely on the friendly, knowledgeable staff at Skyview Orthopedics to answer all your questions and assist you in any way possible to help restore your good health.

Effective Treatments for Workplace Injuries

Workplace injuries can be devastating, not only due to the potential lost income, but to the reduced self-esteem you may feel from being unable to continue as a contributing member of your family and of society.

Dr. Vitolo understands this and has treated many patients just like you; patients who have injured themselves on the job and want to get back to work as soon as possible.

Dr. Vitolo has treated a wide variety of workplace injuries suffered due to pulling, lifting, pushing, holding, carrying, and throwing. Even simple repetitive motion activities such as data entry, can cause pain and may lead to carpal tunnel syndrome – Dr. Vitolo has experience in all of these areas.

Not all workplace injuries require surgery. In fact, Dr. Vitolo’s conservative approach to workplace injuries has enabled many patients to return to work using proven non-surgical solutions.

Knee Injuries

Knee injuries are extremely common and it is important to understand the underlying causes.

  • Arthritis is among the most common causes of knee pain in adults, and osteoarthritis, is the most common type of knee arthritis
  • Ligament injuries are common and can occur during athletic activities causing severe discomfort and instability. Types of ligament injuries include ACL, PCL, MCL and LCL.
  • Cartilage, or meniscus tears, are an extremely common cause of knee pain and can occur at any age. Meniscus tears are most often seen in athletes, but are also the result of a degenerative process seen in older adults. A traumatic meniscus tear occurs when the knee joint is bent and then twisted
  • Tendonitis, or inflammation around the joint, is a condition commonly caused by overuse and jumping activities.
  • Chondromalacia, also called “runner’s knee,” causes pain under the kneecap and is due to a softening of the cartilage. Having a dislocated kneecap usually causes severe pain during the dislocation, and can lead to chronic knee pain later

Only a physician can make an accurate diagnosis of the cause of your pain and symptoms, and determine proper treatment. If you have experienced a knee injury, see your doctor.

Shoulder Injuries

The most common shoulder injuries do not involve the bones, but instead, involve the muscles, ligaments, and tendons. Since athletes are most susceptible to shoulder problems, many conditions develop slowly, over time, through repetitive, and intense training. Some patients have a tendency to ignore the pain and "play through" a shoulder injury. However, this only aggravates the condition, causing more problems later.

  • When one of the shoulder joints is moved or forced out of its normal position, this condition is called instability. Individuals suffering from an instability, or “dislocation” problem will experience pain when raising their arm and may feel as if their shoulder is slipping out of place
  • Rotator cuff muscles allow for the arm to lift overhead. When the rotator cuff is injured, individuals may not recover their full shoulder function without timely care and intervention
  • With shoulder injuries, some individuals may either underestimate or neglect the extent of their injury due to the steady pain, weakness in the arm, or limitation of joint motion
  • You should seek medical attention immediately for inflammation in the shoulder because it can eventually lead to a more serious injury

If you have experienced a shoulder injury, see your doctor.

Take a Step Toward Relieving Foot and Ankle Pain

If you participate in endurance activities such as tennis, basketball, and running, you increase the risk of stress fractures, which are small cracks that occur in a bone due to the overuse of the muscles. Overtired muscles, unable to reduce the shock of repeated impacts, transfer the stress to the bones.

These activities and others also increase the risk of Achilles tendinitis, a common condition causing pain along the back of the leg near the heel. Although more common in athletics, an injury to the Achilles tendon can also occur on the job.

As a patient of Dr. Vitolo, you will find an experienced surgeon using the latest equipment and techniques to relieve the foot and ankle pain you may be experiencing. Dr. Vitolo will also help you learn how to avoid further foot and ankle injuries.

Experienced Bone and Joint Care

Bone and joint pain does not have to restrict your quality of life. If you have a degenerative condition, Dr. Vitolo can explain to you how the option of joint and hip replacement surgery has improved the quality of life for many of his patients by relieving pain and restoring normal movement.

For bone fractures, Dr. Vitolo and his experienced staff can help you with a complete range of treatments and rehabilitation programs to get you up and around as soon as possible.

You do not have to live with bone and joint pain – call Dr. Vitolo today at (973) 300-1553.

Help for Your Chronic Conditions

Many of Dr. Vitolo’s patients have not had any traumatic injury from athletics or the workplace, but are suffering from ongoing, debilitating chronic conditions. Some of these conditions are the result of advancing age, others may be genetic.

One of the most common chronic conditions that Dr. Vitolo has been treating for many years is arthritis, which is an inflammation in the joints.

The most common form of arthritis is osteoarthritis which causes the cartilage in a joint to become stiff and lose elasticity.

Although osteoarthritis can occur in almost any joint in the body it is most prominent in the the weight bearing joints of the hips, knees, and spine.

If you suffer from arthritis or any other chronic orthopedic condition and are seeking relief from its pain, call Dr. Vitolo today at (973) 300-1553.
